This panel is on mediation and democracy. Papers in this panel will specifically address the themes discussed in Professor John Keane's book Democracy and Media Decadence (2013, Cambridge University Press). In a time where communicative abundance has produced cyber-citizens, e-democracy, and the unparalleled scrutiny of arbitrary power, have we accidentally created our anti-thesis? Does media decadence for example lead to the silencing of the citizenry? Does it allow for the concentration of vast illegitimate power? And do new modes of surveillance override any democratic gains achieved through communicative abundance?
