Representation is not only a buzz-word in contemporary political theory, but a conceptual platform from which questions about the performance of old forms of democracy and the potential of new varieties are launched. This panel is primarily concerned with equality as a basic component of the democratic character of representation. To what extent is equality present in traditional forms of representation, i.e. in electoral representation? How can it be secured in new forms of representation, such as various kinds of deliberative, discursive and aesthetic forms? What is the understanding and importance ascribed to equality in recent attempts to develop new criteria for democratic representation beyond dyadic relationships, such as those built on democratic procedures (e.g. Urbinati), systems (e.g. Mansbridge and Parkinson), and acceptance by appropriate constituencies (e.g. Saward)? In what sense does the emphasis on civil society actors enhance and/or decrease the role of equality in new conceptions of democratic representation? We invite papers that discuss any of these issues from a normative, methodological, conceptual or historical point of view, or try in general to shed new light on the relationship between equality and representation.
