Abstract

The rise in western Europe over the last five years of counter-globalisation as a key mobilising and federating frame in social protest has been accompanied by an apparent diversification of protest repertoires. Protest events carried out by groups associated with a wide array of movements, but predominantly focused on issues of cultural and territorial integrity, now regularly feature strategies identified as hacktivism, artivism, situationism, hoaxing, and cultural jamming, whilst increasing press and academic attention has been paid to the emergence of new forms of civil disobedience. This panel seeks to map the contours of such forms of protest in local environmental conflicts; it seeks to analyse the role of specific actors, and of new technologies, in the transmission of protest strategies, and investigate possible tensions between national and transnational action frames.
