More and more of the electorates in advanced countries live in metropolitan regions, and the increasing dispersal and polarization of these settings has been linked to changes in political behaviour. This panel will scrutinize the relationship between emerging metropolitan patterns and voting behaviour. At the broadest theoretical level, the goal will be to examine the ways that the territorial dimensions of metropolitan areas affect political behaviour. More specifically, our inquiry will focus on how ongoing processes of metropolitanization, suburbanization and polarization have affected party orientations, voting turnout, and the differences between municipal and national voting. Before drafting a paper proposal contact the panel chairs.
