Abstract

Changes in the macro-environment (major catchwords: urbanization, globalization and Europeanization) of local governments and in the nature of their local communities (emancipation of citizens, changes in local social networks and civil society, challenges to traditional party system and representative democracy) are likely to have effected both people's ideas about what constitutes good citizenship and their civic behaviour. Moreover, local governments have also experimented with new forms of civic engagement. For this panel researchers are invited to present theoretically grounded papers that provide empirically grounded analyses of contemporary local citizenship and local political participation and changes in the political opportunity structures at the local level. Paper proposals should be sent to the panel chair: Bas Denters
