Abstract

We used to think that the personal vote - that share of the vote which is due to the personal performance of the candidate above and beyond the party’s performance, but which is unrelated with the candidate’s 'personal qualities' or charisma - is mostly an American phenomenon. By analyzing instances of personal vote which stem from different - but functionally equivalent - electoral and institutional arrangements in European political systems, we would like to explore the possible connections between this form of stabilization of the electorate and the phenomena of patronage and corruption.
