Environmental Policy and Politics

Abstract

Environmental policy has been among the first policy fields where new directions and new approaches in policy research have been advocated. This panel invites, first of all, papers analysing problems of environmental policy or conflicts in environmental politics with the help of new theoretical approaches. Secondly, to be able to discuss the fruitfulness of these new approaches for policy research, also papers which compare and review different theoretical approaches to the study of environmental policy and politics are welcome. Thirdly, papers applying a certain theoretical approach to different policy fields (including environmental policy) could be helpful to gain insights into the strengths and weaknesses of a new approach across different policy fields. Finally, papers addressing the relation of policy content and policy process in different democratic designs and settings are appreciated. Are some more likely to produce effective and legitimate solutions of environmental problems than others? What knowledge in and of such policy processes is needed to improve the effectiveness and democratic legitimacy of environmental policies? How can policy research produce such knowledge? Is there a new approach which has good reasons to claim that it already successfully delivered such knowledge in processes of democratic environmental policy making?
