Abstract

The purpose of this panel is to introduce formal models of belief revision, discuss their content and relationship with political decisions, and consider recent problems and theoretical insights. Reflections on the following themes are most welcome: Alternative ways of representing beliefs, belief bases and systems (e.g., sets of propositions, semantic networks); characterization and mathematical construction of various types of belief change (e.g., contraction, revision, consolidation); relevant belief structures (e.g., epistemic entrenchment); modelling of iterated revision; non-prioritized revision, i.e., processes that allow for discarding incoming information; belief base assessments in static or dynamic perspectives; heuristic and theory choice; connections with the logics of actions and norms.
