Youth's political socialization

Abstract

Panel questions are: What do we know about political socialization of children, adolescents, and young adults and what is still to be discovered? When, how, and under the influence of who or what do youngsters with different socio-demographic/economic backgrounds develop or not develop and maintain or change fundamental political orientations such as national identity, liking the king/queen or president, support of democracy, political trust, political interest, political knowledge, and voting intention? How does political socialization contribute to youth’s attitudes towards foreign national groups and ethnic minorities within the country, and to national and ethnic in- or exclusionism? Which type of primary and secondary school political education is most successful in providing the ‘citizens of the future’ with a satisfactory level of political knowledge? What can we do to make a new cross-national longitudinal political socialization panel study feasible?
