Abstract

While political science has devoted extensive attention to the causes and consequences of polarization, far less is known about the conditions under which divisions soften, antagonisms decline, and political relations become less adversarial. This panel shifts the analytical focus from escalation to reversal by examining depolarization as a dynamic, context-dependent, and multi-level process. Rather than assuming polarization as a linear or irreversible trajectory, the contributions explore when, how, and with what effects political hostility can diminish across societies and over time.
