The environment facing the regulatory state today is very different from the one in which it was developed. In addition to pressure generated by a range of crises, political pressure - including pressure associated with democratic backsliding - has affected the functioning of the regulatory state. Have the different types of political pressure changed the use of regulation and (independent) regulators? Have political principals changed their approach to regulation and regulators? And how have regulators responded to political pressures, including in their regulatory and communicative processes? Have institutional structures changed? Have new institutions emerged? This panel brings together a set of papers that explore the transformation of the regulatory state in light of (changes in) different types of political pressure.
