Abstract

Strong democratic institutions are essential for ensuring accountability, transparency, and the rule of law. However, in many Central and Eastern European (CEE) states, institutions often struggle to resist political influence, enforce accountability, and combat corruption. While some countries have built resilient institutional frameworks, others face persistent challenges such as political interference in the judiciary, weak anti-corruption mechanisms, and the erosion of checks and balances. This panel will explore the evolving role of institutions in CEE, focusing on how they uphold—or fail to uphold—democratic accountability in the face of corruption and political pressure.
