The transition to a sustainable future requires profound transformations in economic structures, trade systems, and societal norms. While ambitious climate and sustainability policies are being developed at national and international levels, their implementation is shaped by competing interests, economic power dynamics, and social resistance. From debates over degrowth and circular economy governance to the influence of business power and public contestation of environmental policies, the interaction between economic structures and climate action is complex and often contested. Understanding these tensions is critical for crafting policies that are both effective and socially accepted. This panel examines the interplay between climate policy, economic systems, and societal responses. The papers discuss issues such as the ripple effects of the European Union’s trade-sustainability instruments on global trade subsystems, patterns of support and resistance to degrowth policies, and the emergence of a global circular economy governance framework taking a security lens. Moreover, turning the papers presented assess how business power contributes to negative urban sustainability outcomes, and investigate conflicting visions of environmental and urban policies in the context of the 2026 Winter Olympics. By engaging with diverse methodological approaches and theoretical perspectives, this panel aims to advance our understanding of how economic interests, trade systems, and political power shape climate governance. It invites discussion on how to reconcile economic imperatives with ambitious climate action and how to navigate conflicts between different societal and business actors in the pursuit of sustainability.
