The panel brings together critical contributions on civic and democracy education in the light of contemporary social and political transformation processes linked to the ongoing popularity of right-wing populist movements, democratic backsliding, and de-democratization processes worldwide. The panel offers a unique and timely selection of papers on a variety of European civic and democracy education case studies including papers discussing how ruling parties in Poland shaped civic education programmes and how Norwegian social science textbooks approach the concept of populism. Shifting norms of political participation in relation to worldwide challenges such as climate change, increasing social, political, and economic inequalities and polarization increasingly leading to conflict require a novel approach to civic and citizenship education prioritizing conflict transformation competencies at schools and universities. The Irish Education for Democracy (EFD) and the DEMORACT project explore the use of innovative and collaborative workshop for educators, youth organizations and policy makers to further enhance core democratic competencies. The paper on the Dutch liberal art colleges critically discusses the challenges of higher education to develop interdisciplinary curriculums to educate critical and responsible students able to engage with social changes and crises worldwide such as Gaza for example.
