Promoting Inclusivity: Experiences of First Generation Scholars at a Russell Group University

Speaker: Dr Adrian Millican It is understood that First Generation Scholars (FGS) face a series of challenges in higher education that make the playing field less than fair. Financial, technological, social and psychological challenges appear greater for these students, meaning that overall attainment can be lower. These challenges are never greater than in elite institutions, where FGS may feel more alienated compared to some of their wealthier cohort. This presentation will explore some of the challenges faced by FGS, what can be done to support them and why the news is not all bad because FGS are actually equipped with many skills that help them excel, even within these new and potentially challenging circumstances.
