The relevance and resilience of democratic citizenship is in the practical enactment, the extent to which this is something citizens take seriously and seek to use. The panel will focus on democratic practices of citizenship from conceptual, empirical, political and educational perspectives. The focus will be on how democratic citizen agency is organized, supported and enacted in various national governance and educational contexts. We seek to develop a better understanding of contemporary responsible democratic citizenship as based on the acts and practices of citizens in the context of different bottom up and top down expectations, strategies and interactions. Especially the contemporary processes of political polarization and democratic disenchantment will be addressed with a perspective also seeking solutions in political, and educational terms and discussing the expectations of and towards of citizens in a democratic polity. The empirical discussion is based on but not limited to the research conducted in the first 1,5 years and 6 countries of the EU Horizon Europe Democrat project that aims to strengthen liberal democracy in the European Union by supporting its embedding and sustainability through participatory redesign and implementation of innovative and context-sensitive education for responsible democratic citizenship curricula and learning methods.
