The classical distinction between the party in central office, in public office and the party on the ground has been employed to a variety of themes in party research. This panel takes it as a starting-point to explore patterns of intra-party conflict, their management by parties and their consequences. Central to this angle are tensions that occur between different types of party actors (which have taken over different organizational roles) and within and between different party units both horizontally and vertically. They include tensions or conflict between and amongst party leaders and members, between and within central office and its public representatives or between and within local and national party branches. This panel brings together case oriented and cross-national analyses to explore this theme critical to the functioning of political parties that any complex and functionally differentiated organization is frequently confronted with.
