Political violence and political parties

Abstract

Political violence is intertwined with other forms of political action and many armed groups are associated with political parties that contest elections. The presence of political violence in a state can have a powerful impact too on broader patterns of electoral competition. This panel explores the relationship between political violence and party politics and welcomes paper proposals that address any aspect of this theme. Below is a non-exhaustive list of possible themes: • Relationships between armed groups and the political parties with which they are associated. • Transitions from violence to electoral politics. • The relationship between democracy and political violence. • The organisational legacy of armed groups on political parties. • Engagement between states and political parties associated with armed groups.
