Ethical review processes and the study of political violence

Abstract

Speakers: John Morrison, Royal Holloway, University of London Eke Bont, Royal Holloway, University of London Ashton Kingdon, University of Southampton Maura Conway, Dublin University Empirical study of radicalization, terrorism and violent extremism comes with several considerations regarding data protection, rights of research participants and researcher safety. Ethical review processes have a role to play in ensuring that these issues are solved in accordance with ethical principles of research. Research projects on political violence are not always easy for ethical review committees to deal with because research in this field comes with its own special challenges. These challenges may require openness for and acceptance of unconventional solutions. This roundtable brings together four experts who have extensive experience with ethical review processes to discuss how to apply ethical principles to political violence research projects and interact with ethical review boards.
