The driving forces of protest, radicalization, and also extremism are often conceptualized exclusively from a domestic perspective. But is such a restriction still appropriate in view of an increasingly dense global and digital exchange of goods, ideas, and information? What role do international events play in the development of radical attitudes and discourses at the domestic level? And to what extent are extremist groups and their actions also influenced by international developments? The existing literature cannot provide satisfactory answers to these questions yet. Papers in this panel, therefore, tackle the international dimension of radicalization and extremism from different theoretical, methodological, and empirical angles. Our contributions will explore some of the potential impacts of international factors that shape domestic radicalization processes and emerging extremism by combining theoretical and conceptual contributions with novel data.
