Abstract

While the European Union engages in a range of processes of legitimation, this panel draws attention to the gendered dynamics of participation within various decision making spaces. This panel explores the ways in which mechanisms and spaces of participation – citizenship, corporate boards, lobby groups, the Council on the Future of Europe, and the European Parliament – are both shaped by and engaging in a process of shaping the gendered politics of the EU. In a moment where women are increasingly present at high levels of decision making in the EU institutions, this panel offers an insight into the complex dynamics of engagement and legitimacy and shows the continuing role played by gender.
