The EU has portrayed itself as a proponent of gender equality, LGBTIQ+ rights and tolerance as it actively advocates equality rights and human rights. However, with the rising success of far-right parties in some member states and a growing number of anti-gender/-feminism actors within EU’s institutions this commitment to gender and sexual equality as well as human rights is being put to a test. This panel discusses the current dynamics concerning the commitment to equality and human rights in the EU and its institutions. The papers in the panel analyse discourses on gender and sexuality as well as on demography in the EU institutions and how this interacts with its governance and policies as well as with feminist and LBTIQ+ interest groups’ work to promote equality in the EU member states.
