Abstract

This panel focuses on democratic backsliding in the European Union from various research perspectives. To this end, the panel focuses on research dimensions with regard to democratic backsliding, including the nexus between democracy, European integration and EU responses towards democratic backsliding, the interplay of normative democratic theory and the practical question of how to deal with backsliding Member States, as well as the effects of democratic backsliding on EU foreign policy. The panel pays particular attention to the difference of institutional actors' responses to democratic backsliding in the European Union, normative implications of sanctioning backsliding Member States and the effect of democratic backsliding on the EU's external action.
