Abstract

Over the last years, anti-gender politics have become a new focal point in academic debates. While anti-gender politics appear as a global phenomenon, this panel aims to inquire into Eastern Europe’s unique position, investigating whether the region is another battlefield for anti-gender politics in a global context or a setting for unique strategies, which are contextually developed to answer to its specificity. This panel also ambitions to push further theoretical engagement with this topic, taking seriously the urgency of better conceptualization, the need for further vernacularization of concepts and approaches, and the importance of overcoming “us versus them” studies. This panel pursues two objectives. On the one hand, it has the ambition to expand the flourishing literature on right-wing populism and illiberalism in Eastern Europe towards a perspective acknowledging the importance of gender in politics. On the other hand, the literature on gender and politics suffers at times from too close a focus, losing sight of the wider social and political developments. Therefore, this panel aims to widen the scope of the reflection and to show that anti-gender politics are a good vantage point to gauge broader political and social challenges in Eastern Europe.
