In recent years, scholars have begun to develop a vast literature on the topic of civilian agency in war and conflict. This research demonstrates that civilians in war zones are actively engaged individuals, and not just passive victims. However, within this literature, the role of gender is typically overlooked, and civilians are frequently essentialized into general categories. The papers presented in this panel will examine how agency, peacebuilding, mobilization and general patterns of war during Colombia’s armed conflict are gendered. By incorporating research from distinct periods in Colombia’s conflict (and postconflict moment), they will theorize how particular gender and sexual identities shape the perpetration of violence, responses to that violence, and civilian perceptions of war itself.
