Abstract

In recent years, there is increasing reference to disintegration in the EU literature. However, the meaning and function of the concept have often remained vague, as various phenomena ranging from the exit of member states to non-compliance with EU law have been described as disintegration. This panel seeks to examine European disintegration from conceptual, empirical, and normative perspectives in order to explore its potential as a systematic category. Papers will address issues such as the relation between disintegration and differentiated integration; causes and consequences of disintegration; possible connections between Euroscepticism and disintegration; and challenges of democracy and legitimacy associated with disintegration.
