Abstract

As the digital has shaped all aspects of social life, it has also influenced all forms and manifestations of political violence. Yet, we know surprisingly little about the actual mechanisms of online (de-)mobilization, about the interlinkages between online and offline dynamics, and about the strategies behind the various and rapidly evolving formats and platforms being used. Systematic empirical research on these issues remains challenging for many reasons that range from limitations of data access (e.g. closed spaces, ethical and legal barriers, temporality) to the necessity for multi- or even interdisciplinary research programs. This panel provides insights from empirical research that shed light on the various textual and audiovisual formats, strategies and platforms radical(izing) actors use and on the role political violence plays both as a trigger and as outcome of such online dynamics. It covers diverse phenomena of radicalization and political violence – from religious to political radical groups and individuals, from violent to non-violent forms.
