Abstract

Papers in this panel take a broadly comparative view of political parties. Taking advantage of several recent and new cross-national data sources on parties and their institutional environments, they investigate parties’ organizational choices and resources as both causes and consequences of the environments in which parties compete. On the one hand, papers by Borz, by Poguntke, Scarrow & Webb and by Fabre investigate the extent to which party organizational differences reflect their institutional environments. On the other hand, the paper by Calossi & Pizzimenti considers party organization as both a cause and a reflection of parties’ policy priorities, asking whether policy convergence can be traced to differences in how parties organize their relationship with important economic interests. As a group these papers provide insights about the origins and consequences of party organizational differences.
