To support and inspire early career scholars in politics, gender and sexuality, our Standing Group on Gender and Politics is delighted to offer an Early Career Scholars Programme as part of its 2026 flagship Conference in Newcastle.
The programme comprises two events scheduled during the morning of the first conference day:
Alongside these, the Standing Group will also host Speed Mentoring Sessions online from Monday 25 May – Friday 12 June.
The Pre-Conference Workshop will be on Monday 15 June 09:00 – 10:45 BST (includes coffee break).
This workshop aims to build collective strategies to understand and counter increased precarity in higher education across academic and geographical contexts. What are the structural changes taking place in higher education in your context? How have these affected possible career paths for early career scholars and introduced new challenges? How are these new challenges shaped by the existing intersecting structural inequalities in academia? How can we build solidarities and forms of collective struggle across contexts and career stages?
Registration is open to all. In case numbers exceed the room capacity, priority will be given to Early Career Scholars from minorities and disadvantaged groups, including those belonging to non-Western universities and other groups often marginalised within the discipline.
The workshop includes short roundtable contributions, followed by a collective discussion. Speakers for the roundtable will be announced soon. Please register before 30 March 2026.

Meet the EJPG Editors session will be held on Monday 15 June from 10:45 – 12:00 (BST).
Publishing is a cornerstone of academic advancement, allowing researchers to share their work with the wider scholarly community. In this session, co-lead editors of the European Journal of Politics and Gender (EJPG) , Jennifer Piscopo (Royal Holloway University of London) and Phillip Ayoub (University College London), will share their insights as accomplished researchers and journal editors.

The workshop is open to all interested participants. Please register before 30 March 2026.
The Early Career Mentoring sessions will take place online during 25 March – 12 June.
Receive advice on career and professional development!
These online mentoring sessions cater to a range of needs – whether you are seeking advice on securing postdoc positions, navigating tenure, managing administrative duties, overcoming institutional obstacles such as sexism, racism and homophobia, or juggling life and work.
The Standing Group will carefully match mentors with mentees, ensuring they find a mutually convenient time for one 30-minute online session.
As the mentoring session takes place online, the mentors and mentees do not need to be participating in the ECPG 2026. However, in the conference we have reserved a time slot for a mentoring lunch. We hope that mentor/mentee pairs traveling to Newcastle would use this opportunity to meet face-to-face and continue the conversation.
If it is not possible to accommodate all the mentees, priority will be given to Early Career Scholars from minorities and disadvantaged groups, including those belonging to non-Western universities and to other groups often marginalised within the discipline; as well as to those attending the ECPG in Newcastle.
We are looking for both mentors and mentees! Please register your interest before 30 March 2026.
