About the conference

The Conference on Central and East European Politics is a biennial event that facilitates critical debate and the presentation of cutting-edge research about recent developments in politics and international relations in Central and Eastern Europe.

This is the first edition of the flagship conference of the Standing Group on Central and East European Politics. The conference champions methodological diversity and promotes plurality in analytical perspectives. It aims to:

  • Advance the study of politics and international relations in Central and Eastern Europe
  • Strengthen ties among scholars at all career stages
  • Provide a platform where research ideas can be discussed openly and constructively

Our host

Babeș-Bolyai University (BBU), located in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, is one of the country’s oldest, largest, and most prestigious universities. Founded in 1581, BBU is a comprehensive, research-intensive institution known for its strong academic traditions, international outlook, and multicultural environment. As a host, Babeș-Bolyai University provides an excellent setting for scholarly exchange, interdisciplinary collaboration, and international academic dialogue.

Participants with approved proposals included in the Academic Programme must register via the ECPR online system.

There is no registration or participation fee for this event.

Call for Proposals

We invite proposals for Panels and Papers for the Conference on Central and East European Politics.

Panel and Paper proposals should aim to contribute to the understanding of Central and Eastern European politics and are welcome from scholars at all stages of their careers. Submissions may address any topic related to politics and international relations in the region. Individually submitted papers will be clustered into thematic panels after acceptance. Panel proposals must include a brief panel description, as well as the title and abstract of 3–5 papers. Panel chairs may also propose a paper within their own panel.

Please note the following:

  • You do not need to be a member of an ECPR Member institution to submit a proposal.
  • Each participant may submit up to 2 papers (including co-authored papers) or organised panel proposals. Additional proposals will not be considered. If you are proposing a panel and a paper within that panel, this counts as one submission.
  • Papers submitted as part of a Panel do not need to be resubmitted individually
  • If your Paper has more than one author, the person making / submitting the proposal will be listed as the Paper Presenter.
  • All submissions will undergo a peer-review process, and accepted proposals will be notified by 28 February 2026.

The Standing Group

The Standing Group on Central and East European Politics aims to strengthen relations among scholars interested in Central and Eastern European politics. The Group has organised events that have helped develop specific lines of research and encouraged the formation of specialist research groups and projects. These activities have generated, and continue to generate, a range of publications.

The Group aims to facilitate the flow of information among members regarding ongoing research projects and academic activities in the field of Central and Eastern European politics. It promotes the integration of scholars from Central and Eastern Europe into the activities of the ECPR and seeks to initiate new research agendas in line with the interests of its members.
