Introducing a new platform for researchers specialising in extremism, democracy, and populism to connect, collaborate and share their research.

About the conference

Several extreme, populist parties and leaders are either forming governments or are likely to make extensive electoral gains in 2025. This brand-new conference offers a timely opportunity to discuss ongoing developments and historical patterns.

With a rapidly growing community, the Standing Group on Extremism and Democracy is proud to offer a platform for exchanging insights into the latest debates and trends in this research field.

The London conference features nine thematic sections, reflecting the rich diversity of research agendas surrounding contemporary challenges in democracy, extremism, and populism.

We invite researchers across all regions, research approaches and methodologies to present and discuss their cutting-edge work. With 60 panels and an anticipated 240 presentations, the conference promises to be a vibrant and stimulating space for collaboration, dialogue, and discovery.

The Standing Group

The Standing Group on Extremism and Democracy provides a vibrant platform for scholars investigating the complex intersections of extremism and democracy across the globe.

Academically neutral, the group welcomes researchers from diverse disciplines including sociology, social psychology, and contemporary history while maintaining focus on the political dimensions of extremism. As part of ECPR, it champions a comparative approach to these pressing issues, fostering collaboration that transcends disciplinary and geographic boundaries.
