Our Standing Group on Law and Courts invites researchers at all levels to join the European component of the Global Politics of Law and Courts Workshop.
First held in October 2022, the Joint Global Politics of Law and Courts Workshop is organised concurrently in Europe – by our Standing Group on Law and Courts, and in the United States – by the Global Law & Politics Group.
The European component of the workshop, coordinated by ECPR, is designed to bring together a diverse group of early-career scholars working on judicial politics, legal mobilisation, and related topics from across Europe.
The second iteration of the workshop will be hosted by the Department of Political Science, University of Oslo. The event will be held back-to-back with the IUROPA workshop also organised in Oslo, to facilitate mutual participation.
There is no fee to attend the workshop, however, spaces are allocated on a competitive basis and you must apply to take part.
The first afternoon of the workshop will be a hybrid session to facilitate interactions with scholars attending the US side of the event. The key aim is to connect early-career European researchers with senior US scholars working on related topics, and vice versa.
Due to time zone differences, the second day of the workshop will only be attended by those participating in the European workshop.
This format was very well received by participating young scholars from both regions during the inaugural edition.
We look forward to welcoming Lee Epstein (University of Southern California) who will deliver a keynote lecture as part of the European workshop.
The European component of the workshop brings together a group of 10–15 scholars interested in completing research on judicial politics and law and courts using a wide variety of research methods. The workshop is not restricted to a specific topic. We encourage you to bring your ongoing work on law and politics.
Each participant will submit research papers that are read by all participants and give a 3-minute presentation on their paper. Each paper will be assigned a discussant who will have 10 minutes to critically review the paper. This will be followed by 30 minutes of open discussion which aims to give the paper author extensive feedback.
Two papers from participants in Europe and two papers from participants in the United States will be discussed in a joint, hybrid session.
The workshop is a unique opportunity, bringing together early-career and senior scholars from Europe and the United States.
Non-tenured and early-career scholars are especially encouraged to submit their work and ECPR will have funding available to support their participation.
You do not need to be affiliated with an ECPR Member institution or be a member of the ECPR Standing Group on Law and Courts to apply for the workshop.
There is no fee to attend the workshop, however, spaces are allocated on a competitive basis and you must apply to take part.
To apply, submit this form by midnight UK time on Friday 12 May 2023 including the following:
You must have a My ECPR account to apply and register. If you don't already have one, it's free and takes a few clicks to create.
You will be informed about the outcome of your application by email in early July. Successful applicants will be then invited to register for the event.
