Two-week intensive study on Transnational Organised Crime and its control internationally

On the UN premises in Vienna, this is a unique chance to enrich your knowledge, discuss and critically reflect on the challenges posed by organised crime and existing national and international containment policies. You will be part of a selected group of experts, including scholars and practitioners.

The SGOC collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is unique and it is proud to be contributing to the Education for Justice initiative, a component of the Doha Declaration Global Programme.

As with previous SGOC schools (Catania in 2009, Leuven in 2010, and Ohrid in 2011), the Vienna Winter School is intended to enhance interactions between scholars and practitioners and provide a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities presented by the fight against organised crime.

The Education for Justice initiative

Developed as a result of the Doha Declaration on integrating Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice into the wider United Nations Agenda to address Social and Economic challenges, Education for Justice (E4J) is an initiative of the UNODC adopted in 2015 by the 13th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice.

The initiative aims to promote the rule of law at national and international levels, to encourage public participation, and to build a culture of lawfulness among children and youth through the provision of age-appropriate educational materials on topics related to criminal justice, crime prevention and the rule of law, and the integration of those materials into curricula at all education levels.

At university level, E4J facilitates and promotes teaching and research on issues related to UNODC mandate areas, including anti-corruption, organised crime, human trafficking, migrant smuggling, counter-terrorism, cybercrime, criminal justice and arms trafficking, as well as on integrity and ethics.

Learning objectives

The SGOC Winter School curriculum is designed to help participants:

• Explain the restraints and opportunities for crime provided by the current nature of international borders
• Distinguish the various ways in which criminal activities and criminal structures transcend international borders
• Critically assess the validity and reliability of data on transnational crime, corruption and terrorism, including the use of big data
• Identify the major elements of the legal and institutional framework for international cooperation in combatting transnational crime, corruption and terrorism, and to assess their impact on the control of these threats
• Describe private sector, public-private and civil society responses to transnational crime, corruption and terrorism, and to identify existing best practices

Applications for the 2019 Winter School have now closed. 

You will find out whether your application has been successful by Thursday 1 November 2018. All accepted students must confirm their participation and pay the registration fee by Saturday 10 November 2018.

Curriculum

The Winter School will cover, inter alia:

• Transnational organised crime and its various manifestations (human trafficking and smuggling of migrants, drug trafficking, environmental and wildlife crime, cybercrime, trafficking in cultural property, counterfeiting arms trafficking, etc.)
• Corruption, money laundering and asset recovery
• Corporate crimes and misconduct
• International terrorism and crime-terror nexus, counter-terrorism
• Sustainable development goals against transnational crime
• Criminal investigation and prosecution
• Data collection, research methods and risk analysis techniques applicable to the study of global crime
