Abstract

The national elections held in Greece in 2023 lead to the need to conduct the national post-election voter survey (ELNES 2023), in order to draw reliable conclusions about the main patterns of electoral behaviour in this particular election. This is the context of the paper entitled "The 2023 Hellenic National Election Study (ELNES2023)", which pay particular attention to the Greek case. Based on Greek political landscape and on modern and traditional approaches to electoral behavior, such as economic voting, this paper explores in depth the determinants of the Greek electorate's vote for the 2023 elections. For the needs of the research, questionnaires used in a random sample of Greek citizens, which contain the core questions of the international research network Comparative Study of Electoral Systems (CSES), in which member countries participate with the main objective of collecting and utilizing data on the electorate, its behavior and its comparative study, as well as questions adapted to the Greek case. In addition, the data collection process follows an innovative methodological framework, using SMS to randomly generated telephone numbers, as well as a process of telephone interviews to numbers that could not be answered online. For the purposes of the study, innovative data analysis tools (statistical programming softwares) be used, which enable the implementation of the complex searches of the survey. This research will show how economic voting and other issues like the performance of the government and the impact of leadership influenced the vote in this particular election. The innovative methods used in the data collection process give new possibilities to the scientific community regarding the tools and methods of data collection in national election studies, while their analysis reveals the critical aspects of the electoral outcome in the Greek parliamentary elections of 2023.
