Abstract

Climate change poses an urgent challenge globally, necessitating coordinated responses from various actors. Political parties are naturally at the forefront of these efforts; however, interest groups also adapt to the evolving landscape, taking into account the voices of the concerned public. This paper explores the stances of interest groups, political parties, and citizens in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Poland regarding environmental policies related to climate change. Through a unique national survey of interest groups, we examine preferences for climate protection at the expense of economic growth, comparing median responses with data from political parties (CHES survey) and citizens (EES survey). Our findings reveal significant divergences among the priorities of these entities across the nations. While interest groups present varied perspectives based on their organizational priorities, political parties generally exhibit a tendency to prioritize economic growth, as evidenced by higher median scores. In contrast, citizens show a stronger commitment to ecological sustainability, reflected in considerably lower median scores indicating a preference for environmental protection, even at the cost of economic growth. In the full version of the paper, we aim to delve deeper into the variables influencing the positions of interest groups. By examining factors such as organizational budget, group type, and regional differences, the analysis seeks to uncover the underlying dynamics that shape the perspectives of interest groups across the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Poland. This exploration will contribute to a better understanding of the interplay between advocacy strategies and public sentiment in navigating the pressing issue of climate change.
