Abstract

What do ministry career paths look like for men and women? Using an original dataset on ministers in Germany (1991-present) and New Zealand (1996-present), we explore differences between the men and women that hold these positions. Specifically, we explore whether career progression factors like holding leadership positions within parliament, previous ministerial experience, number of terms in parliament, and age have a differential impact on the likelihood that men and women enter the ministry. Additionally, we explore differences in the ministerial portfolios that men and women have access to once they enter the ministry. We classify portfolios as prestigious vs non-prestigious and masculine vs feminine.
