Abstract

Europe is not the only region troubled by increasing politicisation and interferences in judicial independence. To the contrary, many states in Latin America are also experiencing decreasing public trust and rising autocratic legalism. Author critically engages with the second aim of the book European Perceptions of Judicial Governance and focuses on the role of trust and public expectations of judicial governance. Using the example of Latin America countries such as Uruguay and Argentina, the author demonstrates how institutional design affects the trust of people to judges, and how institutional weakness reflects in frequency of political interference in judicial independence.
