Abstract
In the dynamic landscape of the digital age, memes have transcended their initial role as mere internet satire, evolving into influential instruments that wield significant power in shaping public opinion and moulding political narratives. This qualitative study embarks on a comprehensive exploration of the perceived importance of meme creators, shedding light on the motivations, intentions, and strategic approaches of six key individuals who stand at the forefront of this transformative phenomenon.
Through in-depth, semi-structured interviews, the research unveils the conscious efforts of meme creators to move beyond the surface-level humour traditionally associated with memes. Instead, they strategically employ persuasive elements to challenge mainstream narratives, foster critical thinking, and influence political behaviour. These creators, often overlooked as mere jesters of the internet, reveal a deliberate intention to disrupt the status quo and engage in shaping the socio-political discourse.
Beyond their comedic façade, meme creators are increasingly recognised as active participants in the political arena, disrupting traditional communication paradigms. This study underscores their role in resonating with diverse audiences, steering conversations, and democratising political engagement.
