Studying meanings of democracy empirically on the macro level

Abstract

Based on the Polish Parliamentary Corpus (PPC), a unique collection of the proceedings of the Polish Parliament's upper and lower chambers from 1919 to 2023, we examine how associations with the term 'democracy' have evolved in Polish parliamentary debate. Using Natural Language Processing, we examine the extent to which different connotations of the term 'democracy' reflect frequent political transformations of the Polish political system over the last hundred years.
