Austrian Exceptionalism? Insights From a Huge Department in a Small Country

Abstract

In Austria, political science has been institutionalized in the academia only in the early 1970s. As the discipline was regarded as "leftist" the academisation was contested two departments have been established at the Univesity of Vienna - according to the country's consociational democratic tradition. Also, universities in only two other cities established political science departments. Today, two university political science departments have mainstreamed gender in their curricula - a success of feminists entrepreneurs in these departments. In Vienna, until today, professors, associates and external lecturers contribute to the curriculum. However, the Bologna process challenges these institutionalisations as only few students are willing to study gender courses in addition to other courses.
