In order to mitigate various shortcomings of modern democracies, local governments across Europe are currently experimenting how to increase citizen engagement and citizen participation by strengthening direct democracy (referenda) or other forms of informal participation (mini publics, public forums etc.). However, these so-called ‘democratic innovations’ vary to a great extent in their formats. In this panel we will look at current research dealing with different democratic innovations and their effects.
