In order to mitigate various shortcomings of modern democracies, local governments across Europe are currently experimenting, how to increase citizen involvement in policy making through different kinds of democratic innovations (referenda, mini publics, public forums, public debates etc. …). In this panel we will look at current research dealing with different democratic innovations and their integration into local democratic systems, focusing for example on their impact on local conflicts, public policies, citizens behaviours and opinions. Comparative papers are highly appreciated.
