Abstract

Globalization and regional integration in the European Union and elsewhere has to some extent reconfigured political authority across multiple levels that cut across standard state jurisdictions. This raises questions as to democracy - its possibilities and its justifications; whether it requires the state; its affinity with federalism; and how to envisage its subject and object (demos or demoi?).
