Abstract

As research on political conflict, polarization, and democratic strain has expanded, so too has the need for conceptual clarity and robust measurement. This panel brings together contributions that critically examine how core constructs in contemporary political science are defined, operationalized, and empirically assessed. Rather than taking key terms for granted, the panel focuses on the analytical foundations that shape how political divisions are studied and interpreted. By foregrounding issues of terminology, operationalization, and construct validity, this panel advances a meta-theoretical conversation about the tools scholars use to diagnose political divisions. It underscores that how we measure and define political phenomena is not merely technical, but shapes the conclusions drawn about democratic health, social cohesion, and the nature of contemporary political disagreement.
