Lives Between Worlds: Migration, Memory, and Democratic Imagination

Abstract

This panel explores contemporary understandings of identity, belonging, and democracy in Europe, shaped by migration and transnational memories. Bringing together empirical and conceptual work, the panel examines how migrants and minority communities navigate political and cultural landscapes that span multiple states, how collective memories are reshaped as they circulate across borders, and how (cultural) institutions mediate evolving narratives of nationhood and representation. It thereby highlights how “lives between worlds” contribute to reimagining democratic possibilities in an interconnected Europe.
