This panel explores the current frontiers of research on EU multilevel and fiscal governance and provides a platform for networking and scholarly exchange. To this end, it combines two book presentations with an interactive roundtable format about the current big questions surrounding transformations, challenges and opportunities for EU multilevel governance, particularly in the core state power area of fiscal integration. Presenter: Kent Weaver, Georgetown University Discussant: Christoph Knill, LMU Munich Part 2: Roundtable discussion Panelists: Thomas Christiansen, LUISS University Eva Heidbreder, Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg Christoph Knill, LMU Munich Eva Thomann, University of Konstanz Kent Weaver, Georgetown University Tiziano Zgaga, University of Konstanz In the second part, the discussion will open up in a roundtable format that will involve contributors of two forthcoming special issues in the Journal of European Public Policy: “State and Future of European Union Fiscal Integration” (Editors: Tiziano Zgaga, Tomasz Wozniakovski, Eva Thomann) “’Show me the Money!‘ The Changing Dynamics of Economic Governance in the European Union” (Editors: Thomas Christiansen, Lucia Quaglia) The roundtable discussion touches upon key, shared red lines & questions that run through these books and the special issues: 1. Through what policy dynamics, if any, is fiscal integration leading to more convergence of member states compliance and spending of EU money? 2. What are the challenges to multilevel governance and fiscal integration facing the EU today, given among other things the multiple security threats and seismic shifts in transatlantic relations? 3. In what ways could fiscal integration move the EU closer to a federal system, if at all? The panel will be accompanied by an informal networking activity (dinner).
