Abstract

This panel focuses on how political narratives shape identity, allegiance, and democratic resilience in an era of populist contestation. It explores how citizens negotiate tensions between partisan loyalty and democratic principles, how collective identities are reshaped through lived experiences and shifting geopolitical narratives, and how communication frames around misinformation influence trust, polarization, and civic engagement. Taken together, the paper presentations explore how the power of narratives to define political choices, reorient national identities, and legitimize or challenge authority. By examining how stories of democracy, conflict, and disinformation are told and received, the panel highlights their central role in sustaining or undermining democratic life.
