Abstract

This panel examines how activism adapts and challenges democracy under democratic backsliding and authoritarian pressures. It explores diverse contexts and methods: civil society responses to political extremism, protest camp infrastructures in repressive regimes, opposition networks, legal and coercive protest control in democracies and autocracies, and the moral duty to protest. The contributions offer insight into how activism can sustain or reinvent democratic spaces, highlighting the tensions between repression and participation in contemporary politics.
