In person icon Citizenship Education as Practices: Evidence from Interventions

Abstract

The key to developing democratic citizenship knowledge, skills and attitudes is to provide actual opportunities for participation already in the formal education context, starting in the classroom. Yet, it can be challenging to create such authentic participatory democratic experiences where young people can develop their agency as active and responsible citizens when the experience at the classroom, school, local community and state level can differ markedly and be seemingly disconnected. The panel explores the possibilities to strengthen democratic citizenship education through a better connection of educational activities into the diverse practices in educational designs, contents and methods as well as governance, civil society and community linkages. This includes conceptual and practical perspectives, including innovative ideas, techniques, initiatives or interventions supporting responsible democratic citizenship through education for democracy. The discussion is informed by but not limited to the intermediate outcomes of the two years of the Horizon Europe Democrat project that aims to strengthen liberal democracy in the European Union by supporting its embedding and sustainability through participatory redesign and implementation of innovative and context-sensitive education for responsible democratic citizenship curricula and learning methods.
