The panel addresses a crucial but underexplored area of political research: the governance of sustainable food systems through the lens of food democracy, while reflecting on its broader implications for democratic governance and policy change. While research on Sustainable Urban Food Strategies (SUFS) and grassroots food initiatives has gained momentum, significant gaps remain in understanding how and under which conditions democratic innovations contribute to both reinvigorating democratic engagement and improving local food policies. The panel aims to bridge these gaps by examining how food democracy initiatives—such as food policy councils, citizen summits, and participatory governance models—are designed, implemented, and scaled across different governance levels, offering potential pathways to more inclusive political processes and more effective policy responses. By bringing together scholars from political science and related fields, this panel aims to deepen both theoretical and empirical understandings of food democracy and its relevance to democratic governance. Studying food democracy provides valuable insights into how participatory processes and democratic innovations in the food sector can be applied to other areas of governance, such as environmental management, public health, and social justice. We welcome contributions from a diverse range of methodological approaches to enrich the discussion on this topic.
